Ilon Musk’s company Starlink has got the last regulatory approval to start satellite internet service in India. News agency Reuters gave this information quoting sources as saying.

Starlink is the third company that has got a license to operate satellite internet service in India. Earlier, OneWeb and Reliance Jio were approved.

Come, let us understand this matter through question and answer…

Question 1: What is Starlink and why is it special?

answer: Starlink is a SpaceX project, which gives high-speed internet through satellites. Its satellites revolve close to the Earth, causing the internet to run sharp and smooth. It is especially beneficial for those areas, such as villages or mountains, where common internet does not reach.

Question 2: Why did it take so much time to get a license for Starlink?

answer: Starlink was trying 2022 for entry in India, but was delayed due to security concerns. The Government of India had laid conditions like data security and call interception. Starlink accepted these conditions and got the license of the Telecom Department after receiving the letter of introduction in May 2025. Now he has also received the last regulatory approval i.e. the approval of the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Center (IN-Space).

Question 3: Now the Starlink will have to do more to start service?

answer: After getting the license, Starlink will now have to get a spectrum from the government. Ground infrastructure has to be prepared in India. This includes creating satellite meaning station, communication gateway and a control and monitoring center.

After this, the company will have to do service testing and trials for security clearance. Security agencies will closely examine Starlink service. Commercial service cannot begin without security clearance.

Question 4: When will Starlink service start in India?

answer: The exact date has not been stated yet, but according to sources, service can start in a few months after security testing and infrastructure is ready.

Question 5: How fast will Starlink service be and what will be its expenses?

answer: Starlink claims to give download speeds from 50 Mbps to 250 Mbps, which is enough for works like streaming, video calls and gaming. Starlink’s standard kit in India is expected to cost around Rs 33,000.

This includes satellite antenna, mounting stand, Wi-Fi router and cables. However, the price of monthly subscription plans is not clear yet.

Question 6: Which partners are in India for Starlink?

answer: India’s two largest telecom companies Jio and Airtel announced partnership with Starlink in March. Both these companies will sell Equipment of Starlinks in their retail stores. This partnership will further strengthen the Starlinks in India.

Question 7: What will be the benefit of Starlink’s service in India?

answer: Starlink’s satellite-based internet service, especially in the rural and remote areas, may have a game-changer, where the Internet does not have access. It will support the mission of Digital India and increase digital connectivity in sectors like education, healthcare.

More than 6,750 satellites of Starlink are in low meaning orbit (Leo), which gives low latency and high-speed internet. The company is planning to increase its number of satellites to 42,000 by 2027.

Question 8: Starlink service is available in how many countries?

answer: Starlink is offering its service in more than 100 countries. In Asia, it is present in countries like Mongolia, Japan, Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Jordan, Yemen and Azerbaijan. Recently, Starlink service has started in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

Satellite network provides high-speed internet coverage

  • Satellite makes beam internet coverage possible from any part of the earth. Users get high-speed, low-altency internet coverage from satellite networks. Laquetan means from the time that it takes from one point to another.
  • The Starlink kit consists of Starlink dish, a Wi-Fi router, power supply cables and mounting tripods. For high-speed internet, the dish has to be placed under the open sky. The Starlink app exists on iOS and Android, which ranges from setup to monitoring.

In June 2020, the government established IN-Space

The Department of Space established the IN-Space in June 2020. It works as a single-window agency to regulate and facilitate private sector participation in space activities. In-space also works to promote licensing, infrastructure sharing and space-based surpluses for non-governing entities.
